volume 2 - mid 1970's

I had gone into the Air Force in 1971 after being laid off from a rather dead-end job and not having money to continue studying at the local community college... while in the Air Force I had been stationed in West Germany for three of the four years of my enlistment... having more money than I needed to get by I bought photo equipment, an audio system and traveled as much as I could...

I married and had a child while in the service...

In the spring of 1975 I was discharged and we returned to Minneapolis. That summer I began my studies at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design...

We were living in North-East and the school is in South Minneapolis. This meant a daily commute through the city. I would follow the river to downtown, through the center of town to the school...

In the summer after my second year at MCAD I split up with my wife and got an apartment near the school. At first it was going to be temporary, while I finished school, but it was soon clear that there was no chance or reason for us to work things out...

That summer I worked as a lab/workshop assistant at Lightworks, a Summer Photography Workshop operation that had relocated to Minneapolis from rural Wisconsin.

I tried to continue with classes in the fall and may have for another year but ended up working in the photo/film/video equipment room and doing some free-lance studio assistant work as well... There were a couple of factory jobs and driving taxi very early in the morning mixed in there as well...
